About This Work

Composer:  Michael Butkus-Bomier

Description: Here is a set of 25 etudes for piano solo, based on the intervals of the 1/2 step, whole-step, minor and major 3rd, perfect 4th, and tritone. Each interval receives its own etude, and then each is combined with every other alternative, in groups of two intervals, then three, and so on, to the finale, where ALL the six intervals appear. The music ranges from clearly "modern" sounds to more traditional tonal structures, even ballads and sonata-like movements. There is an Etude for the Left Hand Alone. ALL the pieces feature mirror fingerings wherever possible, and symmetrical structures between the hands. Black-white key combinations are also maintained between the hands, such that whenever possible, each hand is playing the same color key at the same time, often with the intervals inverted as well! Fingerings are often indicated in the middle of the grand staff, as they will apply to BOTH hands at once. The layout is designed to be printed on both sides of a page, with the coverpage opening to reveal the explanatory notes on the right side, and the first musical notes on the left. This makes the pageturns as convenient as possible. For use as study or performance material, as individual pieces or as a group. The order is not relevant to an artistic presentation, although playing them as they are presented is logical. Audio sample is Etude .5+1.0, the half and whole steps. MBB
