About Composer/Arranger

Matthew CochranMatthew Cochran is a singer/guitarist/composer who eschews the categorizations of traditional classical music. A modern-day Troubadour, Cochran mesmerizes audiences with a “breathtaking ability to highlight his clear, light tenor with intricate accompaniments on the guitar” (Soundboard). He is equally at home performing his own compositions, Schubert lieder, Appalachian folk ballads, or cutting-edge works by today’s leading composers.

Cochran’s solo projects feature his original compositions performed on both classical and traditional American instruments. From 2012-2013, he released two EPs of original voice and guitar music: Bend for solo voice and guitar, and American Unoriginal, a four-song suite for voice, guitar, and small ensemble. Cochran’s 2006 solo guitar recording Shenandoah (Clear Note) explores the influence of dance and song in the music of Beaser, Arnold, Rodrigo, and others.

Cochran is a founding member of the critically acclaimed Tantalus Quartet, and toured with the group from 2004-2012. The Tantalus Quartet’s self-released Debut has received rave reviews from critics: "The range of dynamics on this disc is unmatched in the genre. Tantalus Quartet is breaking new ground in terms of their aesthetic" (Rosewood Review). 2013 will bring new releases by the Tantalus Quartet, a solo voice and guitar project featuring Cochran’s “Found Song Cycle” based on texts from Found Magazine, and Vapor Trail from a Paper Plane, the first full-length release from Matthew Cochran.

Cochran’s 2012-2013 concert season included appearances in Germany and Poland and 2 tours of the Eastern U.S. Cochran is Assistant Professor of Guitar Studies at DartonState College in Albany, GA. He holds a Doctorate in Guitar Performance from the Florida State College of Music, and MM and BM degrees in Guitar Performance from the Eastman School of Music. From 2007-2009, he served as Convention Manager for the Guitar Foundation of America. He performs on D'Addario Strings.
