Crystal Hinners grew up in the small town of St. Clair, PA. Ms. Hinners discovered her love for music at the age of sixteen when she received her first guitar. She began taking lessons with Jim Juranis at Foltin's Music Center in the neighboring town of Pottsville, PA. This teenage hobby soon turned into a passion, which lead her to pursue a degree in music.
Ms. Hinners received a Bachelor of Music in Classical Guitar Performance from Mansfield University, where she studied with Dr. Matthew Slotkin. During her undergraduate career, Ms. Hinners sought musical exposure from various genres by performing in a Jazz Lab Band and in various Jazz Combos. She also performed in the pit for the productions of The Last Five Years and The Assassins, at The Arcadia Theater in Wellsboro, PA. In addition, as an advocate for chamber music, she has performed with a violinist, a cellist, vocalists, flutists, and saxophonists.
Since she started studying classical guitar, Ms. Hinners took full advantage of any available learning opportunities. She has performed in masterclasses for Manuel Barrueco, Eduardo Fernandez, Nicholas Goluses, Bruce Holzman, Scott Tennant, Eliot Fisk, and many others. Her love for the guitar extended into the community by participating in various guitar festivals such as the Alexandria Guitar Festival, The 8th & 9th New York Guitar Seminars at Mannes, the Guitar Foundation of America Convention, and The Hartt Scool Guitar Festival.
Ms. Hinners began her graduate studies at The Hartt School, where she studied with Richard Provost. She recently relocated and is now pursuing a Master of Music in Classical Guitar Performance at Syracuse University, studying with Dr. Kenneth Meyer. In February of 2012, Ms. Hinners became a teacher of the Zaira Meneses Classical Guitar Program through Say Yes to Education, a nonprofit organization located in Syracuse, NY. She enjoys bringing music to young students who may not have had an opportunity to study otherwise. Ms. Hinners also teaches privately and is actively forming a guitar and vocal duet with Alexandria Mucci.
