Description: The Fallen is a piece that responds to war and the way that it affects those directly involved. The texts come from The Spoon River Anthology by American poet Edgar Lee Masters. The poems are written as free-verse monologues delivered post-mortem by characters in Masters' fictional town of Spoon River. Of the hundreds of monologues in the anthology, I chose three for my piece. They occur consecutively in Masters' anthology and their narrators are connected. The first poem, Harry Willmans, depicts a young man who enthusiastically enlists in the army, only to find the harsh conditions of war unbearable. He is ultimately shot to death in battle. The second, John Wasson, tells the story of a man who leaves his family to fight the British, and returns unable to provide for his family. The narrator of the final poem, Godwin James, envies Harry Willmans' fatal end as he struggles to find meaning in the aftermath of the conflict.

I was recently looking for some good 21st century Voice and Guitar music when I stumbled upon this composer. The guitar part was hard but well worth the effort as the audience at my recital was applauding like crazy after we finished. I would recommend this piece to anyone looking to do more current Vc/Gt programs. It pairs wonderfully with Dusan Bogdanovic's vocal works.
