About This Work

Product Description

Composer: Trevor Babb

Instrumentation: Guitar and Voice

Era: 21st Century

Description: The Fallen is a piece that responds to war and the way that it affects those directly involved. The texts come from The Spoon River Anthology by American poet Edgar Lee Masters. The poems are written as free-verse monologues delivered post-mortem by characters in Masters' fictional town of Spoon River. Of the hundreds of monologues in the anthology, I chose three for my piece. They occur consecutively in Masters' anthology and their narrators are connected. The first poem, Harry Willmans, depicts a young man who enthusiastically enlists in the army, only to find the harsh conditions of war unbearable. He is ultimately shot to death in battle. The second, John Wasson, tells the story of a man who leaves his family to fight the British, and returns unable to provide for his family. The narrator of the final poem, Godwin James, envies Harry Willmans' fatal end as he struggles to find meaning in the aftermath of the conflict.

About Composer/Arranger

Trevor Babb

American guitarist/composer, Trevor Babb, has left audiences "happily baffled" (New Haven Advocate) by his courageous approach to both very old and very new music.

Mr. Babb has received several awards and recognitions including a Fulbright Award, the Yale School of Music's Eliot Fisk Prize, and Second Prize in the Denver Classical Guitar Society Debut Competition in 2011. He has performed throughout the US as well as in Switzerland and Spain as a soloist and chamber musician with the Yale Recital Chorus and Orchestra, Ossia New Music, the Apeiron Ensemble, the Benson Forum on Creativity and on Rochester's public radio station, WXXI. In November 2010, Trevor performed on the Yale in New York concert series with the Yale School of Music guitar department in Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall.

He has played in masterclasses for some of the world's best guitarists including Luigi Attademo, Judicael Perroy, Paolo Pegoraro, Paul O'Dette, Thomas Boysen, Raphaella Smitts, and Scott Tennant. He has also worked with composers Nicolas Bolens, Luis Naòn, Victor Cordero-Charles, Dusan Bogdanovic, Stephen Goss, Katherine Hoover, and David Lang on their own music.

As a passionate advocate of contemporary music, Trevor actively composes and performs his own music. He has also given first performances of pieces by Nicolas Bolens, William Gardiner, Justin Hoke and Eugene Astapov.

Mr. Babb holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the Eastman School of Music and a Master of Music degree from the Yale School of Music. He also studied for a year at the Haute École de Musique de Genève in Geneva, Switzerland and is currently a candidate for the Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the Yale School of Music. His principal teachers have been Nicholas Goluses, Benjamin Verdery and Dusan Bogdanovic.

  1. Not easy but worth the work

Posted by Andrea Cousetta on 8th Dec 2013

I was recently looking for some good 21st century Voice and Guitar music when I stumbled upon this composer. The guitar part was hard but well worth the effort as the audience at my recital was applauding like crazy after we finished. I would recommend this piece to anyone looking to do more current Vc/Gt programs. It pairs wonderfully with Dusan Bogdanovic's vocal works.
